IELTS Writing Task 1
Get out your pen and paper – time to write!
Okay! So you've made it to the writing section of the IELTS test! Congratulations. You're doing a great job studying, and you're almost done (Or maybe you've just begun? Who knows haha). Okay. Let's see what you have to do for Task 1.
- 1st) In total, you are given 60 minutes for both writing tasks. You only want to spend up to 20 minutes on Writing Task 1 (Why? Writing Task 2 is worth twice as many points and requires 100 more words).
- 2nd) Write in a formal voice. What does that mean? Use academic language. No slang!
- 3rd) Write at least 150 words.
- 4th) What do you have to write about? Graphs, charts, and describing processes. Why? You need to show that you know how to analyze and interpret different images.

IELTS Writing Task 2
You're halfway done!
Awesome. It's time for Task 2. If you're limited on time and can only concentrate on one of the writing tasks, spend it on this one. It's worth 2x as many points, and requires 100 more words. Let's get to know Writing Task 2.
- 1st) You should not have spent more than 20 minutes on Writing Task 1, so you now have 40 minutes to spend on this part.
- 2nd) Remember, use formal English! None of that nice slang you've been studying. This is not the place for that type of lexicon
- 3rd) Write at least 250 words.
4th) What do you have to write about? For Task 2 you are given a topic that you need to either support or argue against (just give your opinion). You will justify your opinion while discussing the topic, highlight and summarize any problems, and present any solutions that back your argument.
5th) Take it easy. Writing is difficult, especially when someone is timing you.
